One more hero gone

Sad news this Christmas season that has affected me more than I thought it would. Singer songwriter Vic Chesnutt passed away on Christmas Day, 2009, at the age of 42.

I started thinking tonight that I should cover one of his songs during my set at the New Year's Eve Eve show this week in Charlottetown, but after going through a bunch of tabs . . . I realized that I can't sing his songs. I don't understand them. His music, like most songwriters, came from a place of pure inspiration, and he put words together like no one else. Curious, quirky and weird, he had a presence and a talent that no one has ever come close to having, and no one ever will. A true individual and a unique voice . . . I've decided that my tribute to him will be to simplify my songwriting, and let my words ring out, to "let my freak flag fly", and be thankful for my health.

Wherever you are, Vic, I hope you knew that you inspired a great many of us, and I hope you found some peace.
